Lewis Mattern in 1921, after graduation from Georgetown University Law School in 1913 and a period of law practice in Washington D.C. and in New York City. Back then a patent practitioner would typically have sought a patent on an apparatus for cutting steel. Today a practitioner in the firm is more typically concerned with a bi-stable laser for optical signal generation, or with a device for linearizing the output of an amplifier using digital signal processing, or with a neural network based memory device for enabling a robot to perform quality control of a production piece.
